HERE COMES THE BOOM

Because I gave my colleagues a "Movie Night" coupon as part of my Fun Christmas Coupon collection as Christmas gifts, I chose to buy them this movie as it is somewhat work related since we are doing the One Fighting Championship event.

I didn't expect much but I'm surprised that "Here Comes the Boom" is actually my movie because it preaches almost everything I believe in.

You'd think that a comedic Mixed Martial Arts movie would really have nothing to do with a petite Asian girl like me (I initially thought so too), but I was very much touched by the movie because some of the characters are so "me". I love how they brought 'music' into the movie. It is creative and brilliant in the most simple way. Two seemingly unrelated industry can in fact be linked in such a unique way through a screenplay.

Perhaps for some, there's really nothing much about the movie.

Kevin James plays Scott Voss, an unmotivated biology teacher who doesn't really care about educating his students anymore because he has lost his passion. But when the budget cutbacks in the school jeopardises the music program, causing Marty (Henry Winkler) to lose his job, Voss stepped in to raise the money to save it. While tutoring the Citizenship class, he met his student Niko who is an MMA trainer. Through MMA, Voss found his fire and passion again and strives to motivate everyone around him. It is true, sometimes, you need some other things to rediscover your lost passion.

Themes
The two main themes of the movie just describe and embody who I am as a person. Even my colleague sitting next to me has to tell me - "That's so you Tammy".

Passion
You got to love the things you do - the rest will fall in place. I always fight for passion and I always believe that in whatever you do, passion must comes first. Last year, I got lost because I lost the passion for my job. It got too overwhelming and I wanted a change - to find my passion again, to find what I really love to do.

I believe they are people who doesn't get this, and there are people who mocks people who works for passion. Some people work for money and the thing is, they don't realised that actually they are also working for their passion, which is the passion for money.

See, everything is driven by passion.

In the movie, Voss found out that his close friend never really liked to paint, but took on his father's paint business just because someone had to. Voss told his friend that you gotta find what you love to do. Earlier his friend was constantly arguing with the wife and his kids were undisciplined. Later, when his friend found a job he loved, his life took a turn. That's what passion can do. And that's why I would never let myself lose it.

However, the side effects of being passionate? - You become nuts

Music
Trust me, if you watch the movie, the quote that you'll bring home with you is "Life Without Music is A Mistake". This is made by the hilarious music teacher, Marty. I really kinda love this character - he is super funny! (Hahahahaha, I'm laughing as I am writing this)

Another one of my favourite quotes by Marty in the movie is: "Music brings you where words can"

It is true that music defines me. I relate to music through their lyrics. And many times, I express myself through songs. And yes, some people use music and song lyrics to learn the language. "Here Comes The Boom" highlights that. Music is great and is so important.

There's this scene where Marty said he heard this motivating song in the car on the way to work, and he said, "It's a sign!". Do you know, I do EXACTLY THAT!

One of the most touching parts in the movie has to be when the orchestra was playing for Voss as he enters the UFC. It was beautiful. The musical piece has the ability to make the whole scene even bigger than it is. That's the power of music.

Others
Another thing I liked was the shots of the fight. Camera shots were cleverly angled to reflect the fighter's point of vier, well, at least giving you a certain idea of how it might feel like if you are in the ring. On top of that, the flying kicks and strikes were brilliantly captured in various paces (fast, slow), and it keeps the excitement in tact. My colleagues and I were so excited that we too added in additional sound effects - "owww, ahhh, wooowwww" on the sideline. I'm not sure if one can experience that in the real fight, live, but hopefully it is similar.

Overall, yes, quite a predictable story - I mean, what else can you expect right? But I must say, there were enough comical antiques and witty lines to keep you entertained for the whole 90 minutes. There wasn't a dull moment for me - so it's good. Plus, it's a really heart-warming movie that gives you the extra boost to find your passion and get motivated again.

Not a must-watch but you have nothing to lose watching this one, especially if you wanna kick some "blues" ass.
