FILLING THE PARTING GLASS
My headphone went silent and then I hear a breathing sound which led to a beautiful voice singing "Of all the money e'er I spent, I spent it in good company..." and I thought to myself, how true.
As the melody gently flows on, this Celtic tune brought back memories of Liverpool and flashbacks of me in the beautiful Cathedrals and York. How I wish I could be back there again with this melodic backdrop on my eardrums, just reflecting on life in peace and harmony, feeling protected by the heavens and angels that seemingly shelter the place.
"The Parting Glass" was allegedly the most popular song sung in Scotland at the end of friends gathering before "Auld Lang Syne". It is bittersweet really that farewell songs are some of the most beautiful ones.
I credit Ed Sheeran for his amazing cover of this song because I personally think he added his own flavour to this traditional Scottish and Irish song, making it his own.
Of all the money that e'er I spent
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
Alas it was to none, but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me a parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Good night and joy be with you all
A man may drink and not be drunk
A man may fight and not be slain
A man may court the pretty girl
And perhaps be welcome back again
But since it has so ought to be
By a time to rise and a time to fall
Come fill to me a parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Good night and joy be with you all
This song marks an ending to a good year I've spent with great company.
This song also marks an ending to old dreams that didn't work out and for new dreams ahead that I will work for.
This song marks the end of the sadness and tears from last year while I welcome tears of joy in the year ahead.
Cheers!
