DREAMING OF PARADISE

The moment this song accompanied one of the magical scenes in Life of Pi, I knew I need to have it on my playlist.

I love it because it aptly describes how a girl wishes for a more beautiful place and how reality breaks her.

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
So she ran away in her sleep
And dreamed of
Para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise
Everytime she closed her eyes

She was born idealistic but suddenly something shook her and broke her bubble. She realised that the beautiful world she lived in is no longer there. As she grows, the people around her changes, and her perspectives also alters when she face different things and is exposed to the grey areas in life. No matter how  hard she tries to run, she is not able to escape the ugliness of the world.

And the best place to go is paradise, which is only reachable in her sleep.

Don't you realised perhaps that's why we always sleep when we are upset. It sometimes helps us run away for awhile - stops us from thinking. That's why I love to sleep, because I love to dream. If you are having a bad dream, you can wake up. But you can't in reality.

Too true...too meaningful and too beautiful.

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
And the bullets catch in her teeth
Life goes on, it gets so heavy
The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear a waterfall
In the night, the stormy night she will close her eyes
In the night, the stormy night away she'll fly

Every night, she cries herself to sleep because it is too tough to face the world. And again, she would run to the safest haven - paradise.

And dreams of
Para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise,
This could be para-para-paradise
Oh,oh,oh,oh,oh,oh
She dreams of
Para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise
Oh,oh,oh,oh,oh,oh...
La-la-la-la-la....
And so lying underneath those stormy skies
She'd say, "Oh, oh, oh...I know the sun must set to rise"
This could be para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise
This could be para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise
Ohhhh.........

I also love how the music video also brings a different meaning to the song - about working towards the freedom you want. No matter how many hardships you face now, if you know where you are heading, you just go for it and you will find the paradise that you'd been dreaming of.

Using elephants as the main characters to represent themselves is really a cute idea.
The song also (deservingly) won the award for Best Rock Video at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.
