MALACCA IS MORE THAN HISTORY
If you have spent your highschool years studying (or merely flipping through) the Malaysian History textbooks, Malacca will be very much embedded in you as a city of historical value. When I think about Malacca, I can't help picturing ancient warriors and words like 'conquer', colonial, historical..
Last weekend, I experienced a different side of Malacca - Malacca, the city of good food. It was a trip that involved a whole day of eating, and that's about it.
After surviving the Friday night traffic, we arrived in Malacca at around midnight with no other plans but just a simple midnight drink. We prepared our bodies for combat by resting early (oh well, it was 2am by the time we doze off) as we know, the next day will be a day loaded with good stuff, at least for our stomaches that is.
The plan to wake up early for breakfast was naturally called off as we had too much fun in dreamland and we lost track of time. The wake-up call came around 11am and after dragging our butts off our beds, it was already noon. So, there wasn't a good morning Malacca moment...but we embraced the afternoon anyway.
Our food expedition started when we lined up for the infamous Chicken Rice balls.
I've been to Malacca 2 times in my life, and I've never had a taste of these infamous sticky rice balls and finally, my third time is really the charm.
For those of you who haven't tasted these rice balls before, I say, you really should give it a try. It is really unique, although there are some who commented that Chicken Rice Balls are overrated. Oh well, they are slightly overrated, but doesn't mean they are not delicious. Worth lining up 30 minutes for but anything more than that, oh well, I'd say do it another day.
After stuffing our tummies with enough rice balls, we plan to help our digestive system by talking a stroll down Jonker Street. I like the street and the shops that sell those super unique crafts and gifts. There are so many types of weird and funny looking items that you have fun just screening through them. I wouldn't buy them, but the thought of the creativity behind the creation of that particular item is amazing. Some of the funny stuff that you'll love to own, but know is a waste of money include a pen holder in the shape of a man's ass and you stuff the pen in the hole...ahem....and then you have telephone shaped like a coffin, cute tee-shirts with clever captions...
All sorts...
Unfortunately, we were not allowed to snap photos of the 'weirdness' so I couldn't bring back any form of imprinted memories.
Other highlights of the trip includes:
My new cowboy hat which I am so super in love with. I'm a country girl at heart...so I love all country stuff and the cowboy hat is the perfect addition to my list of favourite things
New pair of fake glasses. Have always wanted one of those nerdy glasses in order to look geeky. Finally got a good pair for myself! Super delighted although....sometimes wearing it feels kind of stupid.
Hanna. Got my two hands decorated with red paint to as a 'permanent' yet temporary reminder of a good trip up North. Love the heart shape and butterfly ornament that is drawn on my two hands...
The Ship. No I did not eat Western food there. The Ship is actually the Malacca Maritime Museum, containing all sorts of ship related items and also contains details of a fair bit of history. I feel like I'm reliving my school days as I read through the description of history hung on the walls. Great to be back in the 1500s. Sometimes, I really wonder what it's like back then.
Durian puffs. Am not proud of how I wobbled down the entire puff because I was to anxious excited to taste it, but it was delicious!
We had three missions that day:- To taste the Chicken Rice balls, Laksa Mee and The Multi-layered cake. We only completed two as we do not have time for the cake. But no regrets because my tastebuds were happy.
Great trip down the metaphorical land of history. Will most definitely be back for another round of memories.
Cheers to another great weekend!
Love,
TammyC
